February 2012 - Maher Duessel is happy to welcome Alex Boyer into the firm’s Accounting and Auditing Committee, which is charged with the implementation of professional standards for government and non-profit engagements throughout the firm.
January 2012 – Maher Duessel placed second in the GNC Corporate Challenge, which benefitted the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank!
December 2011 - The IRS on released standard mileage rates for use in 2012. For business use of an automobile, it remains at 55½ cents per mile. For medical or moving expenses, it is 23 cents per mile (a half-cent decrease from the second half of 2011). For services to charitable organizations, the rate (which is set by statute) is 14 cents per mile. Please click here to read IRS Notice 2012-1 for more information.
November 2011 – On November 10, Mallory Daniels presented on behalf of Maher Duessel and the PICPA Pittsburgh Chapter Relations with Schools and Colleges Committee to approximately 20 Butler Area Junior High School eighth grade students about becoming a CPA. These students had indicated an interest in accounting careers based on career awareness activities.
October 2011 – Maher Duessel participated in the American Heart Association Capital Region Heart and Stroke Walk on September 25. As of October 5, the team has raised $6,155 for the American Heart Association – the fifth-highest total of all the participating teams!

September 2011 – Partner Lisa Ritter, CPA, CFE was published in Keynotes, the quarterly newsletter of the Pennsylvania Association of Nonproft Organizations (PANO), with an article entitled, “Avoid the Pitfalls of Outsourcing Payroll.” Click here to read the article.

August 2011 - Harrisburg - Congratulations to Alex Boyer, Andrew Kehl, Kevin Ream, Katie Shadron, and Jordan Wenger for winning the PICPA South Central Chapter Volleyball Tournament.
August 2011 - Pittsburgh – The AICPA Government Audititng Standards and Circular A-133 Developments Audit Risk Alert for 2011 is now available. Partner Diane Edelstein, CPA was acknowledged along with six others for their contributions in creating this publication.
August 2011 - Pittsburgh – The GFOA-PA has honored Partner Robert Lent, CPA, CFE, CGFM with Honorary Membership in the organization for life. This formal designation was given because “his imprint on the association is permanent…this former Board member is widely known throughout the GFOA-PA membership for his ready smile and quick wit.”
August 2011 - Pittsburgh – Maher Duessel has once again been named one of the Best Places to Work in Western Pennsylvania by the Pittsburgh Business Times! This year marks the sixth consecutive year that the firm has won this award.
August 2011 – Pittsburgh – Partner Diane Edelstein, CPA was named to the Steering Committee for the 2012 AICPA National Not-for-Profit Industry Conference.
July 2011 - The Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) approved GASB Statement No. 63, Financial Reporting of Deferred Outflows of Resources, Deferred Inflows of Resources, and Net Position. The standard is effective for fiscal years ending after December 31, 2012. Early implementation is encouraged.
June 2011 – Pittsburgh – Manager Janet Feick, CPA was selected for the 2011-2012 40 Under 40: PICPA Members to Watch class due to her active participation in PICPA.
June 2011 – The Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) launched a new web portal for non-public entities to serve as a source of information, including the latest information about the FASB. To view the portal, click here.
June 2011 - For non-profit pension plans, the IRS recently announced that the filing due date will be extended for the 2009 and 2010 Form 8955-SSA, Annual Registration Statement Identifying Separated Participants with Deferred Vested Benefits. The IRS will release more guidance about the extension soon. The modified due date is the later of: (1) January 17, 2012 and (2) the due date that generally applies for filing the Form 8955-SSA for 2010. No Form 5558 extensions will be granted for the January 17, 2012 due date.
June 2011 - The IRS increased an increase in the optional standard mileage rate for the remaining months of 2011 to 55.5 cents per mile. Please click here here to read more.
